Is PTM7950 worth using on a desktop CPU with an IHS?

I'm building my first PC in several years and am choosing cooling for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with a Noctua NH-D15. PTM7950 seems to get excellent results on direct-die chips, so I'm wondering whether a genuine PTM7950 sheet or a Thermal Grizzly phase-change pad would be a worthwhile upgrade over conventional thermal paste for a normal desktop CPU with an integrated heat spreader.

The main benefit on a desktop CPU is longevity. PTM7950 is a phase-change material that is less prone to drying out or pumping out over time, so temperatures may stay consistent for years. It still isn’t likely to improve performance much compared with a decent paste.

One user reported temperatures were essentially the same as regular paste even after using PTM7950 for about two years. It’s non-conductive, which is reassuring, but the more expensive branded versions may not be worth the premium for a CPU with an IHS.

If you decide to try it, make sure you buy from a reputable seller. There are counterfeit or low-quality PTM7950 sheets being sold online. Otherwise, a reliable paste such as Arctic MX-7 should be more than adequate for a 9800X3D and NH-D15.
