What operating system would run best on this older Samsung laptop?

I have a Samsung NP300E5C with a third-generation Intel Core i3, 6 GB of RAM, and Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics. I would prefer Windows, but I'm open to Linux since I've never used it before, as long as it's reasonably easy to learn. GeForce NOW needs to work, and my main priority is getting the best performance possible from this aging laptop. What system would you recommend?

For GeForce NOW, staying with Windows is probably the least complicated option, since compatibility and setup should be more straightforward. Just keep expectations realistic: this hardware was modest even when it was released, so the operating system can only improve responsiveness so much. Windows 11 is not suitable, and Windows 10 may also feel sluggish.

If you mainly want the lightest possible desktop, look at Puppy Linux, Lubuntu, or antiX. These should be much easier on the processor and memory than modern Windows, although you may need to check the current GeForce NOW browser or app support carefully. Linux can make the laptop feel more responsive, but it won’t turn the old hardware into a powerful machine.

Before spending much on upgrades, consider whether the laptop is worth investing in. An SSD and more RAM could make everyday use noticeably smoother, but the third-generation i3 and integrated graphics are still major limits. If you can afford it, replacing the laptop may provide better value than buying parts for a machine from around 2012.
