Is upgrading from an i7-10700K to an i9-10900K worth it for gaming?

I've been using my PC for a while and recently upgraded the graphics card to a Radeon 9070 XT. It performs great, but I'm concerned that my i7-10700K might bottleneck it. Since I'm trying to keep costs down, the i9-10900K is essentially my only drop-in CPU option; moving to a newer Intel or AMD platform would also require a new motherboard, memory, and possibly a cooler. Would upgrading to the 10900K noticeably improve gaming performance, or should I keep the 10700K and save for a larger platform upgrade later?

For gaming, the difference would be very small—often impossible to notice. The 10900K mainly gives you two extra cores and better multicore performance for productivity, but it also uses more power and produces more heat. I’d keep the 10700K unless the 10900K is extremely cheap or free.

There’s nothing wrong with upgrading just because you enjoy finishing out a platform, especially if selling the 10700K offsets most of the cost. Just don’t expect the upgrade to eliminate every possible bottleneck or transform gaming performance—the improvement is mostly a nice-to-have rather than something you’ll clearly feel.

Your resolution and frame-rate target matter. At 1440p or higher, the 9070 XT will usually be the limiting factor, so the 10700K should still be fine. At 1080p with a high-refresh monitor, you might see a CPU limit in some games, but the 10900K still isn’t a major gaming upgrade. Overclocking the 10700K, if your motherboard and cooling support it, may be a better first step.

If you’re spending meaningful money, skip the 10900K and save for a newer platform. A modern CPU and motherboard would provide a much larger improvement, and you could consider reusing DDR4 with certain budget options if your existing memory is decent. Buying into another old platform only makes sense if you find the processor at a bargain price.
