I recently finished building a PC and noticed that my Belkin surge protector shows a green "Protected" light but also a red "Not Grounded" light. I've tested several outlets in this older rental house, and they all show the same warning. I'm not sure how old the wiring is, and I can't modify it myself as a renter. How risky is it to use the computer normally with an ungrounded outlet? Could this damage the PC, or is the bigger concern electrical safety? I plan to ask the landlord to have the wiring checked, but I'm wondering whether there's anything safe I can do in the meantime to protect the computer.

If there’s a GFCI outlet upstream on the same circuit, it may provide shock protection to downstream outlets even though they still have no equipment ground. That can make the setup safer for people, but a normal surge protector still can’t operate as intended without a real ground. Ungrounded three-prong outlets should also be labeled as having no equipment ground.
A plug-in tester can help identify common wiring problems, but it isn’t a complete electrical inspection. Have the landlord verify the outlets and the circuit. Also keep in mind that a surge strip’s protection is limited when no ground is present, so it shouldn’t be treated as a reliable substitute for properly grounded wiring.
The main danger is not usually immediate damage to the computer; it’s that a fault could leave the metal case energized without a proper ground path to trip the breaker. A GFCI can reduce shock risk, but it doesn’t replace an equipment ground. Until the wiring is checked, avoid touching the case if you notice tingling, buzzing, sparks, heat, or a burning smell, and stop using it if any of those occur.
First determine whether these are original two-prong outlets or three-prong outlets with no actual ground connected. A three-prong receptacle that isn’t grounded may have been installed incorrectly and should be inspected by the landlord or a licensed electrician. Don’t open or rewire the outlet yourself.
