Is the Ryzen 7 9850X3D worth $160 more than the 7800X3D with a 4070 Super?

I'm finally replacing my trusty 8700K after several years and am considering a Micro Center bundle, unless a better deal appears soon. I already own a 4070 Super, so I'll keep that GPU and put most of the budget toward RAM and a CPU I can use for many years.

My target is 1440p gaming at the highest practical frame rate, ideally 120 FPS or more at Ultra settings. I mainly play WoW and plan to play WoW Forever when it launches, but I also play Battlefield 6 and want enough performance for future games without making major compromises.

The two bundles I'm comparing are:

- Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Gigabyte X870 Gaming WiFi6 motherboard, and 32GB DDR5-6000 for $760
- Ryzen 7 9850X3D, ASUS B850E TUF Gaming WiFi6E motherboard, and 32GB DDR5-6000 for $920

I've heard the X870 board may be better equipped, while the B850E is simply adequate and might offer fewer upgrade options later. However, I'm not especially concerned about upgrading the platform; if this system lasts as long as my current one, I'll probably build an entirely new PC next time.

The extra $160 wouldn't break my budget, but I'd rather save it if the gaming difference is small. Is the 9850X3D worth paying more for with a 4070 Super, or would the 7800X3D bundle be the smarter choice?

Check the exact board models rather than assuming the X870 option is automatically better. That particular X870 board reportedly has a relatively modest VRM design and may run hot under heavier CPU power levels, while the ASUS B850E board could be the stronger overall choice. For this build, I’d prioritize the better board and value over the chipset label.

The 7800X3D should already be more than enough for WoW, and at 1440p Ultra most demanding games will be limited by the 4070 Super rather than the CPU. You could save the $160 without giving up much real-world performance. The extra cache can still help WoW’s frame-time consistency and reduce small stutters, but that doesn’t necessarily justify the more expensive bundle.
