I'm a teenager who has been saving for a graphics card upgrade. My current PC has a Ryzen 5 5500, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and an XFX TS750 Gold power supply, but the GTX 970 is holding me back. I'm choosing between similarly priced used RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT cards. There's also a 6900 XT available for somewhat more, although I'm worried my Ryzen 5 5500 would bottleneck it. New cards are extremely overpriced where I live, so I'm mainly considering used options. Which upgrade would make the most sense for long-term gaming performance?

Don’t focus too much on the word “bottleneck.” At your budget, getting the best reliable deal matters more. A 6900 XT could be worthwhile if the price difference is small, but only buy it if the card is in good condition and your power supply has the necessary connectors. You can always upgrade the CPU later.
A newer 16GB card may be worth considering if it costs only a little more than the used options. It will be somewhat slower than a 3080 or 6800 XT, but you get a warranty, lower age-related risk, and potentially longer driver support. Also consider selling the GTX 970 or other unused parts after confirming the replacement works.
Between those two, either the RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT would be a huge upgrade from a GTX 970. If the prices and condition are similar, choose based on the games you play: the 3080 has stronger ray tracing and features like DLSS, while the 6800 XT has 16GB of VRAM and generally strong traditional gaming performance.
A used RTX 3080 or even a 3080 Ti can offer good value right now, but check the card’s condition carefully. Ask about temperatures, noise, previous use, and whether it has been tested. Your Ryzen 5 5500 may limit performance in some CPU-heavy games, but that doesn’t make a higher-end GPU pointless.
