What monitor setup works best for coding and a Dell XPS 15?

I'm planning a coding and general work setup with a budget of roughly $1,000–$1,300 CAD, though I could spend more if the upgrade would be worthwhile for long-term use. I'm considering a 21:9 or 32:9 ultrawide, two monitors, three monitors, or an ultrawide paired with a second display.

The monitor will be connected to a Dell XPS 15 9510, so I'd like to know what will work directly and whether I'll need a docking station, especially for multiple displays. My priorities are sharp, comfortable text, easy window and code navigation, and good ergonomics. I won't be gaming much, and I'm mainly using the setup for programming and work.

I'm also unsure about OLED because of potential burn-in from static IDE panels and windows. Are modern OLED monitors reliable enough for this use, or would an IPS display be safer? I'll test some options in person, but I'd appreciate advice on screen size, resolution, monitor arrangement, and whether 21:9 or 32:9 makes more sense for coding.

For mostly static work such as coding, IPS is still the lower-risk choice. OLED text can look excellent, but burn-in remains a consideration when the same editor, menus, and taskbars stay visible for hours. Newer OLEDs have better protection, but if text clarity and long-term reliability matter more than contrast, a high-density IPS monitor is probably the safer purchase.

Don’t assume more horizontal space is automatically better. Some people find a standard 32-inch 4K display more useful because the extra vertical room makes reading code easier. A 32:9 screen can be excellent if you frequently keep several wide applications open, but it can also feel excessive for coding and may be less convenient for presentations or apps that expect a normal fullscreen layout.

Two monitors are often easier for coding because you can control exactly where each window goes. A horizontal 27-inch 4K display plus a 24-inch monitor in portrait orientation works well: the main screen handles the editor while the vertical display is useful for long files, logs, documentation, or chat. Multiple smaller monitors can also be cheaper to replace than one large ultrawide.

There isn’t one perfect setup, but a 34–38 inch curved 21:9 monitor is a strong middle ground. It gives you room for an IDE, browser, terminal, and documentation without becoming so wide that the edges are awkward or screen sharing becomes difficult. For this budget, prioritize resolution, pixel density, text sharpness, adjustability, and panel quality over gaming features.

Your XPS 15 can drive an external display through HDMI or USB-C, since the USB-C ports support DisplayPort output. One monitor may work directly, but two displays are usually simpler with a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock that supports the required resolution and refresh rate. Check the dock’s display limitations rather than assuming any dock can handle two high-resolution monitors.
