Sony DSC-W150 keeps asking me to reinsert the memory card

I recently started using a Sony DSC-W150 and bought a Memory Stick Pro Duo–style microSD adapter with a 16GB Patriot microSD card. Whenever I insert it, the camera displays an error telling me to reinsert the memory stick.

I've tried reformatting the card, deleting its data, switching between FAT, FAT16, FAT32, and even NTFS, and using MiniTool Partition Wizard to create a 2GB partition. Nothing has helped, and the camera doesn't seem to recognize the card well enough to format it internally. I also carefully cleaned the contacts. Is the problem likely the microSD adapter, the card's capacity, or the camera itself? Do I need to buy a genuine Memory Stick PRO Duo instead?

The simplest solution is to use a genuine Memory Stick Duo or Memory Stick PRO Duo rather than a microSD adapter. Those adapters can be unreliable, and older Sony cameras may not recognize every microSD card or adapter combination. Formatting the card differently probably won’t help if the camera can’t communicate with the adapter in the first place.

That’s frustrating, but it sounds like buying the proper memory stick may be less trouble than continuing to fight with the adapter.

Before replacing the card, try a different microSD-to-Memory Stick adapter. The adapter itself may be defective or making poor contact. If another adapter also fails, test a lower-capacity card or use a genuine Sony-compatible Memory Stick PRO Duo, since older cameras can be picky about compatibility.
