Should I prioritize the 7800X3D with a stronger GPU or the 9800X3D with a weaker one?

I'm deciding between a 9800X3D paired with a 3080 Ti or 9060 XT, and a 7800X3D paired with either an RTX 5070 or RX 9070. The system will mainly be used for gaming at 1440p. Which combination makes the most sense? I'm also choosing between CL32 DDR5-6400 and CL36 DDR5-6000, with about a $32 price difference.

Between those memory kits, DDR5-6000 is usually the safer pairing for Ryzen and often has better overall latency despite the looser CL36 rating. If the 6400 kit is compatible, you may be able to run it around 6000 MT/s with tighter timings, such as CL30, but check the motherboard and memory kit before relying on that.

For 1440p gaming, I’d generally choose the 7800X3D with the stronger GPU. The difference between the 7800X3D and 9800X3D is much smaller at higher resolutions, while a faster graphics card will have a bigger effect on frame rates and should stay useful longer.

The RX 9070 is probably the best gaming-focused choice here, especially because it has 16GB of VRAM. The RTX 5070 makes more sense if you specifically need Nvidia features or CUDA-based applications, but for ordinary gaming the 9070 should offer better value and longevity in many regions.

There is one important exception: the games you play matter. If you mostly play CPU-limited titles such as World of Warcraft or Dota 2, especially at 1080p, the 9800X3D could be worthwhile and you may not need a high-end GPU. For typical 1440p gaming across a range of newer games, prioritize the GPU instead.

Exactly. A stronger GPU is not automatically the best choice for every game. For mostly lightweight or CPU-heavy games, the faster processor could make more sense.

My pick would be the 7800X3D and RX 9070, or the 9070 XT if the price difference is reasonable. The 7800X3D is still plenty fast for 1440p, and putting more of the budget into the graphics card should provide more noticeable performance.
