What Could Be Causing Two GPUs to Fail Within Four Months?

I've had two graphics cards stop producing a display within the past four months. Both worked normally at first, then eventually gave no signal. I tested different HDMI and DisplayPort cables and tried multiple monitors, but neither card displayed anything. Before installing another GPU, I want to figure out whether the real cause could be the power supply, reused modular cables, motherboard, PCIe slot, unstable power, poor airflow, or another hardware problem. What should I check first, and can a faulty PSU or bad power delivery actually damage a graphics card?

First, confirm that the cards are truly dead by testing each one in another known-good computer. No display can also be caused by the motherboard, slot, firmware, or another component. If your processor has integrated graphics, remove the GPU and see whether the system can still boot using the motherboard video output.

The power supply and its cables should be at the top of the list. Use a reputable, adequately rated PSU and replace it before installing another card if there’s any doubt. Never reuse modular cables from a different PSU, even if the connectors fit, because the pinouts are not standardized and the wrong cable can damage hardware. Also inspect for loose or poorly seated PCIe power plugs.

Look at the whole electrical setup too. Make sure the PC and monitor are properly grounded and, ideally, connected to the same properly wired power strip or circuit. A damaged cable or grounding problem usually causes display issues rather than killing a card, but unusual power problems are worth ruling out before connecting another GPU.

It would help to know the exact PSU, motherboard, GPU models, and whether the cards were new or used. Check the PCIe slot for damage or debris, try another slot if available, and verify that the case has adequate airflow. Modern GPUs can produce brief power spikes, so an older or low-quality PSU may struggle even if its advertised wattage seems sufficient.
