Forgot my iPhone 14 Pro passcode—can I save my photos before erasing it?

I'm running iOS 26.5 on an iPhone 14 Pro and currently stuck in a three-hour lockout. I may have one or two possible passcodes left, but I'm not sure how many attempts remain before the phone is permanently unavailable. I've used this passcode for years and somehow forgot it.

Most of my data is backed up to iCloud, but I'm mainly worried about my photos. I don't think iCloud Photos was enabled, so I'm trying to figure out whether the photos might still be included in an iPhone backup. My iPhone has also been connected to my Mac frequently, and I may have made local backups in the past.

Is there any legitimate way to recover the photos or access a backup without entering the correct passcode? Would recovery mode preserve anything, or does restoring the phone erase everything? I know I should have kept better backups, so I'm hoping to find out what options I have before making another attempt.

Treat the next attempt as potentially your last and don’t guess unless you’re genuinely confident. Once the phone has to be erased, the only recoverable data will be whatever exists in iCloud, a local computer backup, or another synced service. If no backup contains the photos, Apple generally can’t extract them from a locked iPhone.

Before trying another passcode, check whether the photos are already available through an iCloud backup or iCloud Photos. Photos can be included in a device backup even when iCloud Photos is turned off, but if iCloud Photos was enabled, they’re stored separately and aren’t duplicated in the device backup. If you have a Mac backup, check Finder’s iPhone backup list under the device management section rather than searching the entire system manually. On newer macOS versions, local backups are commonly stored under ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/.

I’m checking my Mac for an older local backup now. I had used computer backups in the past to avoid paying for extra cloud storage, but I wasn’t sure where macOS kept them and initially couldn’t find anything by searching the system folders.

There isn’t a workaround that bypasses the passcode while preserving the phone’s data. If you run out of attempts, the usual option is to erase the iPhone and restore it from an iCloud or computer backup. Recovery mode does not preserve the existing data; it is part of the erase-and-restore process. You’ll also need the Apple Account credentials afterward because erasing the phone does not remove Activation Lock.
