Are My DDR5 RAM and SSD Safe in Regular Ziploc Bags?

I put my DDR5 memory and SSD in separate regular Ziploc bags overnight while waiting for another computer part. I was told plastic bags might create static, so now I'm worried I may have damaged them. They're currently sitting in the bags on a cardboard box on top of a wooden dresser. How likely is it that they were harmed, and what should I do next?

Before handling them, touch a grounded metal part of the computer case or another suitable grounded object to discharge yourself. Then install the RAM and SSD normally and test the system. If they were damaged, you’d usually find out through memory errors, failure to boot, or the SSD not being detected—but there’s no reason to assume that happened here.

They’re very likely fine. Simply placing the parts in separate bags usually won’t generate enough static to damage them. The bigger risk would be aggressively rubbing the plastic against the components, which can build up a charge.

That’s reassuring. I was mostly worried after reading how sensitive computer parts can be to static. Is it okay to remove them and leave them on the wooden dresser?

Regular plastic bags aren’t ideal for long-term storage because they aren’t antistatic, but an overnight stay is unlikely to have caused damage. Take them out carefully, avoid sliding or rubbing them around, and handle them by the edges. A wooden surface is generally better than carpet or fabric; an antistatic bag or the original packaging would be preferable for future storage.

Got it. I’ll avoid moving them around and use proper antistatic packaging if I need to store them again.
