Are High CPU Temperatures Normal for a Ryzen 5 5600X with Stock Cooler?

I recently got a Ryzen 5 5600X and I'm currently using the stock cooler. My PC also has an old GTX 650, which I'm planning to upgrade in about two weeks. However, I've noticed that the CPU temperatures are quite high, even when I'm only using about 30% of the CPU. While playing Fortnite, I see temperatures reaching around 80 degrees, and it seems unusually high even when I'm idling in-game. I've tightened the CPU cooler without any improvement, and in the BIOS, it shows an average temperature around 50 degrees, which still feels pretty hot. Any advice on this?

This is pretty standard behavior. If you grab a decent air cooler in the $20-30 range, you can expect a drop of 10-20 degrees. Check out this one for a solid upgrade: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/43qrxr/thermalright-burst-assassin-120-se-6617-cfm-cpu-cooler-ba120-se

I found a different one with RGB. Would this cooler be a good fit for my build? https://www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-Refined-SE-Technology-AX120/dp/B0BNQBKLZX/

Absolutely! That cooler looks great and should do well for you.

Did you make sure to properly apply thermal paste and remove the protective film on the cooler? The stock coolers aren't really enough for higher-end CPUs, so it's not surprising to see these temps. Consider upgrading to something like a used Scythe Mugen or Deepcool; they'll handle the heat much better!

I’ll definitely look into those coolers! It seems odd that they include such a weak cooler with the CPU.

Running around 80 degrees on the stock cooler isn't great, but it's not unusual. The stock cooler can only do so much, and 50 degrees at idle is pretty typical with it too. To really drop those temps, you might want to scout out some affordable aftermarket coolers on Amazon. They can make a big difference!

Thanks, I'll check those out!

These temps are totally normal for the stock cooler. Once you upgrade your cooler, bumping your CPU to 4.5GHz at 1.2v should get you idle temps around 35-45 degrees and about 75 at max load. Just make sure your cooler can handle it!
