I'm having a huge problem with my MacBook M2 running macOS Monterey 12.4. Out of nowhere, my video and audio have completely stopped functioning. I can't get videos or MP3 files to play in QuickTime or VLC; they just crash! Even in browsers like Safari, Firefox, and Chromium, videos look like they're buffering but only show still images. Oddly enough, I can play videos in Bluestacks with no sound. I feel like I might have developed some bad habits, like never shutting down my laptop, which could be contributing to this. However, I'm hesitant to shut it down, fearing it could be a virus and that I won't be able to access my computer again. I'm looking for advice on steps to take, like whether to run antivirus software or any quick processes I can restart to see if they'll fix the problems.

Check your Audio MIDI Setup. I had a similar issue where my Mac thought I had headphones plugged in when I didn't. If that's the case for you, it might be causing the problem. Just disconnect any virtual audio devices or check if something is misconfigured.
You should definitely update your macOS to the latest version of Monterey (12.7.6). Not only does it help with performance, but it also keeps your system more secure against vulnerabilities. Don't worry too much about malware for now, but getting rid of old apps like McAfee or Norton is a good idea since they aren’t necessary. Focus on updating your system first!
Looks like I found a quick fix! I had a coreaudio issue, and all I did was run the command `sudo killall coreaudiod` in Terminal. It restarted the coreaudio, and everything started working perfectly again. You might want to try that!
Huh, why should I update if I haven't had any issues until now?
