I work with various editing software, including sound and video, and I even dabble in 2D animation. While my projects don't typically use high-quality media, I still face a lot of crashes and slow performance, which is becoming frustrating. I'd love to have a smoother editing experience.
I'm considering upgrading to an Intel Core i7 12700KF, but I'm wondering if it would make more sense to save some cash and go for the i5 12600KF with its 10 cores, or even the i5 14600KF which has 14 cores but still falls within a budget-friendly range.
I've read mixed opinions from other video editors regarding the value of i7 compared to i5, especially when it comes to performance for video editing. I don't have a strict budget but I prefer to keep it under 350 EUR (considering an extra 20 for USD) for both the CPU and motherboard combined, unless a better option is worth the extra cost.
Here are my current specs:
- MSI GAMING X GeForce GTX 1050 video card
- Corsair CX750F 750 W power supply
- I'm planning on getting 64GB DDR4 3200Mhz RAM
- I'm also considering the Dark Rock Pro 5 CPU Cooler (or Pro 4 for an i5 if that works).
If anyone has recommendations for MSI, ASRock, Asus, or Gigabyte motherboards that fit the DDR4 socket, that would be incredibly helpful! I really want to make a wise choice without overspending. Am I overthinking this?

For the motherboard, if you're sticking with DDR4 RAM, the MSI B760M Pro WiFi or a Z690 board would suit your needs perfectly.
I get where you're coming from with budget concerns, but you might find the i7 worth the investment for the performance boost in video editing. If you're really aiming to save, the i5-14600KF is still a solid choice and could handle your workload well.
