I'm a mechanical engineer looking to pick up some programming skills for side projects. I'm a complete beginner, so I'm wondering if anyone has some beginner tips or resources to help me get started. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

As a fellow mechanical engineer, transitioning to programming was a game-changer for me. I started by learning Python through 'How to Think Like a Computer Scientist' and 'Fluent Python'. Spending your free time practicing is key. I created small projects like a simple Pong game to reinforce what I learned. It took me about a year before I felt comfortable enough to get a job in the field, but even then, I was just starting out. Also, use your current job to sneak in some learning whenever you can, even on your phone during commutes!

That's really inspiring! I'm also worried about finding time. Do you think it's better to stick to specific resources or just explore whatever catches my interest?

Starting out, I recommend picking up some programming books and actually doing the exercises. Check out 'The Art of Computer Programming' series. It’s a solid choice, but remember, Bill Gates probably won’t be answering your calls if you finish it! Just kidding, but definitely focus on the exercises to get hands-on practice.

That book is pretty intense! Just make sure to pace yourself and don't stress too much about getting everything right at first.
