Considering Switching to Linux: What Should I Know?

I've dabbled with Linux on devices like Raspberry Pis and a jailbroken Chromebook, but it's never been my main OS. I'm curious about a few things before making the switch. How do I game on platforms like Epic Games and Uplay? Will Windows applications like Ableton and the Affinity suite run properly on Linux? What about my C Drive and all the references tied to Windows? Will I need to relink everything manually? I especially need Affinity and Ableton for my work, and I do some development with Tauri and Cordova, so I also need to ensure Java will work. Plus, my keyboard relies on Kontak software. Can I expect everything to function well on Linux?

For gaming, you can use the Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games, and Lutris works well for other non-Steam games like Uplay. As for your Windows apps, it's a mixed bag. Some may run via Wine, but you might run into issues with VST support, especially for DAWs. Alternatives like Bitwig or Ardour could work for you instead of Ableton.

About your C Drive: Linux doesn't refer to drives the same way as Windows. You won’t have to manually relink everything; just know that any shortcuts you had in Windows won't work in Linux. If you go with dual-booting, a separate drive is safer to avoid issues with updates messing up your boot loader.

Installing Linux won't wipe my OS drive, right?
