Hey everyone, I'm in the process of building an ITX setup and I'm curious about using some really fast RAM with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. I know that this CPU benefits from 6400MT/s RAM, but I'm wondering if I can actually achieve speeds close to 8400MT/s on my ROG Strix X870-I motherboard. Any insights or experiences?

The ROG Strix X870-I is rated to handle RAM speeds up to 8400MT/s, but keep in mind that the 9800X3D itself is officially only good for 5600MT/s. Many users find that trying to exceed 6400MT/s often leads to stability issues. For a good balance of performance and stability, I suggest going with DDR5-6000 CL30. It works well with the CPU and offers better latency and overall responsiveness. If you have faster RAM, just enable EXPO in BIOS and manually set it to 6000MT/s for solid performance without the headaches!
Honestly, I'd steer clear of mini ITX for this kind of build. It restricts expansion options and isn't that much smaller than micro ATX. I switched to micro ATX myself and it's still pretty compact!
It's definitely possible to run faster RAM, but you're rolling the dice on stability. I think some people have made it work, but hitting the silicon lottery is pretty rare. The memory controller in the CPU is what really matters here, and not all 9800X3Ds are equally capable. Just keep your expectations in check!
Going for anything above 8000MT/s can be really tricky. The 8400 speed is particularly tough to stabilize. If you want something that just works, I'd recommend getting 6000 CL30 RAM. If you're keen on overclocking, aim for good-quality Hynix kits and try pushing for 6400MT/s at a 1:1 ratio. Just remember, stability can be hit and miss!
I actually went with micro ATX too, and it feels like a perfect balance of size and functionality.
