Is 8GB VRAM Still Enough for Gaming in 2023?

Hey everyone! I used to game on a 3070ti, but I had to sell it to cover some bills. Now that I'm back on my feet and ready to dive back into PC gaming, I'm wondering if 8GB of VRAM is sufficient for today's games. I usually play at 1080p 144Hz, mostly enjoying realistic shooters like Tarkov, and I love to mod games like Fallout and Skyrim. With a budget of $600, what do you all think? Should I be looking for something with more VRAM? Thanks!

Buying a new GPU? Don't even consider an 8GB card if you can help it. With new titles, 10GB should be your minimum. If you can find cards like the AMD 9070 or 5060 Ti 16GB for around $600, those would be good bets for better performance in demanding games.

Honestly, if you're gaming on titles that take up a lot of VRAM, like heavily modded Skyrim or something new, then 8GB will struggle. It's worth looking for at least 10GB, and you shouldn't pay over $300 for an 8GB card if you're looking to keep up with modern gaming demands.

To be honest, 8GB of VRAM is a bit limiting these days. Ideally, you should aim for a 12GB or 16GB card if you're serious about gaming. Even cards like the base 3080 are great for current and upcoming titles, especially for textures in demanding games. You might struggle with more graphically intense games if you stick with 8GB, especially when modding. But if you're on a budget, going for 12GB like the 5060 Ti could be a solid option if you can find it.

How about the 5060 Ti? Is that a solid choice for 1080p?

For 1080p gaming, 8GB can work for some games, but you'll have to make sacrifices, especially if you like to mod a lot. I’d recommend aiming for 12GB at the least to future-proof yourself. The more VRAM, the better for loading textures and maintaining quality. Your games will run smoother and look better if you can get a more powerful card with extra VRAM!

I totally agree! I have a 4060 with 8GB, and while it does alright, it's starting to show its limits.

Just to clarify, is that $600 for a GPU only or the whole setup? Most answers depend on that!

I have everything except for the GPU actually.
