Hey everyone! I'm new to using Apple devices, and I've been scheduled automatic updates to run overnight, but I've run into a hiccup. A couple of times now, I've woken up to messages saying "updates didn't install because XYZ app failed to shut down" with the option to close the app. I've never faced this issue on Windows or with my Linux setups before. The apps involved so far have been IntelliJ, which asks if I really want to close it, and the Brave Browser, especially when I have an unsaved form open. As a result, my MacBook Pro is now stuck installing updates in the morning, which feels like a crawl! I did some searching, but most results were about terminating stuck apps rather than this specific scenario. I'd really appreciate any advice on how to avoid these shutdown requests during updates!

For the slow update stuff, try timing it when you're not working, like when you're in the shower. Before you go to do something else, just close the apps that usually prompt for closing manually. It could save you a lot of time and hassle!
It partly comes down to how well app developers code their software. Some just don’t respond properly to shutdown requests. And honestly, if you're frustrated with slow updates, you’re likely experiencing typical Mac issues. Windows has its own set of problems, like needing several reboots for updates. Just for future posts, make sure to specify whether you're asking about iOS or macOS since they’re different!
I've noticed it’s usually iTerm that prompts me to quit too. It really depends on the app since developers can decide if they want to allow a shutdown or not. It can be annoying, but it’s there to protect your work. With iTerm, it knows if there are other processes running, so it's designed to block reboot. For IntelliJ, it would be nice if they could automatically save state to let the updates go through. Updates on an SSD can still feel painfully slow though!
Totally agree! iTerm’s warnings can feel excessive at times, but it’s good they keep us from losing work. But yeah, updates shouldn’t take forever!
Got it, I’ll make sure to clarify next time! Thanks for the heads-up! I’ve definitely noticed Windows updates are a whole other nightmare. I just thought it would be more seamless on Mac.
