Why is my Ethernet speed so inconsistent?

I usually get great speeds on my Ethernet connection, but there are times when it drops down to only about 3 Mbps, making game downloads take forever. Other times, I'm cruising at 800 Mbps and finishing downloads in 20 minutes. What can I do to get more consistent speeds?

Check if anyone else in your home is using the connection when you're having these slow downs. Also, what type of internet do you have—cable, fiber, etc.? Do the slow patches happen at specific times? And are you wired directly to the router, or are you using something like a mesh network?

It sounds like you need to identify the cause of these speed drops before you can fix it. Do you live with others who might be using the internet at the same time? It's also possible that your ISP is throttling your connection, especially if you're hitting bandwidth caps. And don't forget to check your router; it could be acting up too!

If you're mainly having issues with platforms like Steam, remember that sometimes their servers can get overloaded and won't deliver full speeds. Also, check if your router is overheating. I once had a router that would slow to a crawl if it got too hot, just by flipping it upside down, I solved all my speed problems!

Looks like the problem might be more about your internet service rather than the Ethernet itself. Have you noticed if you experience the same issues when using Wi-Fi? That could help narrow it down.

You should just call your ISP and ask them what’s going on with your service! 😂 There are so many factors that could be the issue. For me, my ISP tends to throttle my connection right before my account renewal, which is super frustrating!
