What Should I Do Before Upgrading from 14900k to 7800x3d?

I'm planning to upgrade my CPU from the Intel 14900k to the AMD 7800x3d and change my graphics card at the same time. Before I make the swap, I want to know if I need to do a clean installation of Windows 11. I've heard that since these CPUs are close in generation, it might not be necessary. What steps should I take before the upgrade? Also, is there anything specific I need to handle regarding my SSDs?

No need to do a clean install of Windows 11, but be aware that it might deactivate. Just sign in to your Microsoft account to link your digital license, and it should reactivate automatically after you log in again.

I’m curious why you’d switch. The 14900k is known for its performance. Aren't you worried about losing out on power?

You won't need a fresh Windows install, but it's smart to uninstall any Intel chipset drivers and drivers for your old motherboard, then install the new ones for the new board. However, considering the cost, if you already have DDR5 RAM, it might not be worth it unless you're really looking for performance improvements – especially if you're GPU-limited.

I get that, but I've had issues with Intel too; it’s frustrating. My SSDs should be fine to just transfer over to the new motherboard, right?

While you can stick with your existing setup, I personally think a fresh install of Windows is the best approach. It's all about what works for your setup, though!

Thanks for the advice! I'll think about a fresh install.
