Looking to Upgrade My 2014 Build – Need Your Advice!

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my old gaming rig, which is based on an i7 5820K and a GTX 1070. My current setup is from 2014, and I'm feeling overwhelmed by the new tech out there, like Ray Tracing and DLSS. I primarily game at 1440p with low to medium settings, but I'm aiming for high to ultra settings at around 120 FPS. I'm open to lower FPS for more demanding games as long as gameplay remains smooth. Here's my planned upgrade list: an AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, Thermalright cooler, Gigabyte motherboard, 32GB DDR5 RAM, a Samsung 1TB SSD, and a Radeon RX 7800 XT. I want to ensure that this will be a future-proof setup for at least the next five years. I'm also curious if I should consider Nvidia cards for their DLSS support since the RX 7800 XT seems to lag a bit behind the RTX 4070. Would love to hear your thoughts!

It's tough to say how long you'll get 120 FPS on that setup, especially with new games on the horizon. If you're aiming for longevity, it might be wise to invest a bit more in your GPU. The 7800 XT is decent for rasterization but struggles with ray tracing compared to RTX cards. Also, consider saving money by going with a PCIe 4.0 SSD instead of 5.0, which probably won't make a noticeable difference for gaming. Don't forget about a quality PSU if you're reusing an old one!

I appreciate the insight! Seems like I should reconsider the SSD and definitely focus on a solid PSU.

Your build looks solid! The RX 7800 XT can indeed handle 4K at decent settings, and the 7600X is a great choice for balancing cost and performance. Just be sure to include the PSU in your final setup since it's essential for stability. If you're not planning on leveraging Nvidia’s exclusive features, the 7800 XT should serve you well!

Thanks! That's reassuring to hear.

Don’t stress too much about future-proofing; just remember the landscape changes quickly! I think you'll find the 7800 XT does well now, but keep an eye on your games’ demands over the next few years. A sufficiently strong PSU will help a lot too, so glad to see you're sticking with your 850W Cooler Master.
