How Should I Present My Unit Testing Experience in Interviews?

Hey everyone! I've been diving into programming since 2023, and after landing an internship pretty quickly, I got a job late last year at an outsourcing company. I've spent the past three months in training, but then I was tasked with unit testing some legacy projects—some of these are 7 to 14 years old, lacking documentation, using outdated tools like Eclipse classpath with local jars, and I tackled this with minimal guidance. While I managed to figure it out, I feel like I haven't grown as much as I could have. Now, as I start looking for new opportunities and preparing for interviews, I'm concerned about what to say when asked about my last job. I want to be honest about my role without underselling myself. Any advice on how to navigate this would be super helpful!

Just be honest about your experience! You're still early in your career, and it’s normal to start out with unit tests. What matters is that you didn’t get fired and managed to contribute in your role. Don’t underestimate the importance of your work, even if it feels basic—you helped improve some old projects!

I totally get that! I also think it’s impressive you were able to work independently on such complex legacy code. Make sure to highlight how your efforts improved the code's reliability and what you learned from the process. That's valuable!
