Hey everyone! So, I've been using an Azure VM for work, and recently encountered a major issue. I was unable to connect to it and reached out to our IT team. They informed me that my VM bluescreened and, unfortunately, they can't recover any of the data. I'm pretty stunned that such a thing could happen with a cloud-based VM. Has anyone else faced this situation? Is there any chance of recovering lost data?

Let’s not forget that cloud VMs are still just software running on machines. If the setup doesn't include a continuous backup solution, you could lose your data just as you would on traditional hardware. Make sure your IT department understands the importance of backups!
Honestly, it’s surprising if you were storing critical data directly on the VM. You really should discuss backup practices with your IT team to avoid situations like this in the future.
Unfortunately, once a VM bluescreens, any unsaved work is typically gone for good. It's just like any regular computer crash—unless you had backups, there's not much to be done. Remember, VMs can crash just like physical machines.
At the end of the day, it sounds like backups weren’t configured properly. If data wasn’t saved to a persistent storage solution, it’s likely gone after a bluescreen. Always ensure your team has a solid backup policy!
If your critical data was on disk and not just in RAM, there's still hope! Someone with the right access might be able to download the VHD file from Azure and recover the data from there. I've done it before to get back files from a crashing server.
