I'm trying to choose between the RTX 3080 with 10GB of RAM and the 7800 XT with 16GB for gaming at 1080p, with plans to upgrade to 1440p later on. I want to make sure I can use ray tracing effectively. Is the 10GB VRAM on the 3080 going to be sufficient for future games?

I used to have a 3080 and found that 10GB can be restrictive in some games at 1440p. You can lower settings to manage VRAM usage, but the limitation is noticeable.
My 3080 handles 2560x1080 decently, except for extreme settings like path tracing in newer games. Staying at high settings with DLSS generally keeps performance smooth, though!
I have a 7800 XT and while it performs well, don’t expect it to shine with heavy ray tracing. It seems like light ray tracing can be more of a sidegrade than a real upgrade. Plus, I think the 10GB on the 3080 could become an issue at 1440p as some games are already pushing that limit without ray tracing.
If you can find it, consider the RX 6800 XT. The availability might be tricky since mine's been hard to find in good condition without issues.
I'd go for the 7800 XT, even when ray tracing is involved. It’s a solid choice for both current and future gaming needs.
Yeah, that's a challenge I'm facing too. Most mined cards are in rough shape.
