Is Upgrading from RTX 3090 to 9070XT a Smart Move?

Hey everyone! I've got a situation on my hands. I bought a PC back in 2021 featuring an Aorus RTX 3090, and while it's been performing well, I've been dealing with some serious temperature problems for about a year and a half. I did replace the thermal paste a few months ago, which helped temporarily, but now the overheating issues are back and I don't want to keep messing with thermal paste.

So, I thought about just upgrading my GPU and then selling the 3090. I know it's still a powerful card even in 2025, and I estimated I could sell it for around 500-600€ despite the temperature issues. However, looking at current GPU prices is a nightmare, especially for newer NVIDIA cards (seriously, over THREE THOUSAND EUROS for a 5090?!), so I did some research on AMD and found the 9070XT priced around 730-800€. It seems to have comparable or even better performance than the 3090 in most games.

Since I haven't kept up with the GPU market in the last couple of years, I have a few questions:
- Is upgrading to the 9070XT a good idea?
- Are there any major issues with the 9070XT that I should know about?
- Is the performance comparison I found accurate?
- Lastly, do you think I could successfully sell my 3090 even if I disclose its temperature problems?

Just to clarify, I'm not trying to sell it here; I'm just wondering if it's feasible!

As for the thermal paste, MX-2 is good, but you could try other options such as thermal pads if it doesn’t solve the problem. Oh, and you’re definitely not alone in worrying about temps; many users get anxious when their hardware is running warm, especially with the RGB temperature alerts! Always good to be cautious.

It sounds like a solid plan to upgrade from your 3090, especially if the overheating is becoming a hassle. The 9070XT has performance comparable to many of the newer cards, but be cautious about AMD’s performance in certain titles; some games can run better on NVIDIA. Just do your homework on specific games you play! I'd say go for it if they won’t be a deal breaker for you.

It's a bit weird that your old card is overheating like that. You could check for common fixes online or forums for users facing similar issues. As for your upgrade, if you can sell the 3090 at a good price, the 9070XT or a 5070 Ti could be excellent choices!

The 9070XT should serve you well, but keep an eye on game-specific performance. If you're mainly gaming at 1440p, it'll likely handle most titles just fine. As for selling your 3090, I think you'll find plenty of buyers since it still holds value—even with the temperature issues. Just be honest about its condition.

Regarding your thermal issues, many users experience overheating with the 3090. Some suggest checking for dust buildup or considering better cooling solutions, like thermal pads or even liquid metal. But if you’re looking to offload it, plenty of folks would buy a working 3090, maybe even for your estimated price, especially since new cards are so pricey! Just be upfront about the temp concerns.
