I've been using computers since the DOS days and have a decent grasp of tinkering with different operating systems. Recently, I've been diving into Linux distros and testing a bunch in VMs. I've settled on the Cinnamon desktop environment, and I'm particularly interested in Debian-based options. I'm torn between using Linux Mint or Debian with Cinnamon. I appreciate Mint's user-friendliness, but I want a long-term solution without the need to switch distros later on. On the hardware side, I have an ASUS NUC 15 PRO with a Core Ultra 7 processor, which might be a mobile version. I'm looking for advice on whether I made a good choice with this setup and which distro would better suit my needs for tinkering, photo and video editing, running virtual machines, and other productivity tasks. I've ruled out other distros, so I'm focused on these two. Thanks for your insights!

I recommend starting with Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon. It’s based on Debian/Ubuntu, which gives you lots of community support and documentation to work with. You can always transition later if needed, but Mint is beginner-friendly and should serve you well for a long time.
Be cautious with hardware compatibility. Sometimes Mint and Debian can ship with older drivers that might not support newer hardware well. That said, both do receive updates via their managers, but make sure the version you pick aligns with your ASUS NUC specs to avoid potential issues.
