Struggling with Activation Lock on an iPhone 13 – Need Help!

I recently received an iPhone 13 from a friend who doesn't need it anymore. However, the phone is stuck in activation lock because it was lent to someone else, and they didn't remove it from their iCloud. My friend contacted the borrower, who claimed to have removed it, but I checked the phone later, and it's still locked. I've tried reaching out to Apple for help, but since my friend doesn't have the original receipt, they wouldn't assist. They do have purchase info, but it's not enough for Apple. Is there anything I can do, or should I ask my friend to confirm with the borrower again if they really did remove it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried restarting the activation process? Sometimes, doing a restart can check for the Find My iPhone status, which is what triggers the activation lock. It might help in getting around this issue!

I haven't tried that yet. Would a hard reset be considered restarting the activation process?
