Hey everyone! I'm currently coming from a non-technical background and I'm eager to jump into the Linux Sys Admin world. I've received some recommendations from various AI tools, but I really want to hear from people who are in the field and hiring managers about what it truly takes to be successful in this role. I'm curious about the essential skills I need to learn, the type of projects I should undertake, and any certifications that might help me along the way. I know it could take at least four months to build a solid foundation, and while I understand that the tech landscape is always changing, I'm looking for core knowledge that will remain relevant. Instead of just learning tools, focus on solving real problems. Get to know the different tools out there and understand what issues they address. This mindset will set you apart as an admin!
Use Linux every day, even if it's just on a lab box. I recommend getting an HP 370 thin client for practice. Also, learn about managing DNS and setting up servers. It's practical and gives real-world experience!
Sounds great! I'm using a VM right now, but I’m considering setting up an old PC for better hands-on experience.
I took a UNIX class at my community college that changed everything for me. Not a huge time or money commitment, but very transformative!

I’m really interested in understanding how things work and I feel that Linux is foundational for many tech roles, especially given its prevalence in the industry.
Look into RHEL system administration books. The RHCSA certification is a great starting point. In parallel, try automating tasks and managing VMs. Hands-on projects are key!
