I have two Apple accounts: one linked to my iCloud and another to Gmail. The one with Gmail I haven't used since 2014, but today I received an email saying my password was reset, which freaked me out because even if I don't use it, it's still my account. I can't log in because it asks for a trusted phone number that I don't recognize, and the only access I have is through my email. Is there any way to recover the account just using my email? Also, I received several emails about attempts to reset the password and notifications when someone tried to create a new account associated with my email address. Should I be worried that they might have taken full control of my account, or is it possible that I'm still safe since I received those emails?

It sounds like they may have turned on two-factor authentication when they took over your account. Unfortunately, if you don't know the phone number they set up, regaining access could be really tough. In most cases, once someone else has enabled that security measure, it's nearly impossible to regain control without the original trusted number. Sorry to sound bleak, but it might be too risky to rely on that account now.
But does that mean they have full access already since I got those emails about creating an account?
