I'm putting together a roughly $2,000 gaming PC built around a Radeon RX 9070 XT and want to avoid buying anything that's obviously poor value. The current list uses a Ryzen 5 9600X, Thermalright Phantom Spirit EVO, MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi 6E, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, a 1TB Silicon Power UD90 NVMe SSD, an RX 9070 XT, an NZXT H9 Flow RGB+ case, and an 850W Gold-rated modular power supply. The total comes to about $2,003. I'm mainly looking for equivalent alternatives that save money, or parts I might regret choosing. I'd prefer not to reduce GPU performance, but I'm open to changing the case, CPU, storage, motherboard, or other components if the improvement is worthwhile.

Check cheaper RX 9070 XT models from XFX or other manufacturers before buying the Gigabyte card. Unless the cooler, noise level, warranty, or appearance is particularly important to you, paying a premium for one factory-overclocked version usually doesn’t provide much extra performance. A cheaper card plus a more affordable case could fund the CPU upgrade without exceeding the budget.
The biggest obvious expense is the $230 case. Unless you specifically love the H9’s appearance and size, a good airflow case around $70–$100 would free up enough money for a stronger gaming CPU, such as a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or another X3D model. A Lian Li Lancool 207 or similar option would be much better value. The Phantom Spirit is also excellent, but a cheaper Peerless Assassin should perform nearly the same.
The power supply is perfectly adequate, but you can probably find a similarly capable 850W ATX 3.1 unit for less. Gold certification itself isn’t mandatory, though I would still prioritize a reputable model with good protections and a native modern GPU power connector. The case is the part I’d cut first, not the PSU. Also consider a 2TB SSD if you don’t already have additional storage—1TB fills up quickly with current games.
There aren’t any disastrous choices here, but the motherboard and SSD deserve a closer look. Some MSI B850 WiFi 6E boards use a PCIe 4.0 graphics slot instead of PCIe 5.0, so check the exact specifications and consider a board with PCIe 5.0 if the price difference is small. The UD90 is also questionable because some versions reportedly changed from TLC NAND to QLC. A known TLC-based drive from a reputable model line would be a safer OS and game drive, especially if you expect it to get nearly full.
The NAND swap on the UD90 is a great catch. I’m looking for a TLC drive, but I’ll verify the controller, NAND type, and endurance ratings rather than choosing solely by advertised speed.
For gaming, you could restructure the build around a 7800X3D and still keep the 9070 XT by using a less expensive case, cooler, SSD, and graphics card model. At higher resolutions the GPU is usually the limiting factor, so the 9600X is not a bad choice, but an X3D processor can help with CPU-heavy games and improve frame-time consistency. Don’t cut the memory down to one 16GB stick unless it’s only temporary; two matching sticks in dual-channel mode are preferable.
I’d only pay the X3D premium if the games and resolution justify it. At 1440p or higher, the difference may be small in many titles, so putting the savings toward a better SSD or more storage could make more sense.

This is exactly the kind of feedback I wanted. I’m definitely reconsidering the case, though I’m still comparing the gaming benefit of an X3D chip against keeping the 9600X.
