AirPods Keep Disconnecting and Reconnecting—Could My Phone Be the Problem?

For the past month and a half, my AirPods have been repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting in five-minute bursts. It first happened with my AirPods Pro 2, so I replaced them with AirPods 4, but the same problem appeared almost immediately. I then exchanged those for another pair of AirPods Pro, and the issue is still happening—now roughly once a day or every few days, with each episode lasting around 15 minutes. It happens in different places, including at home and at the gym. Since multiple pairs have shown the same behavior, I suspect my phone or one of its settings may be responsible. Has anyone dealt with this or found a reliable fix?

If it happens in several locations and with multiple pairs, the phone is a more likely culprit than the AirPods themselves. Spotify, Bluetooth interference, or automatic switching between nearby Apple devices could all be involved. Try disabling automatic device switching, closing Spotify during an episode, and resetting the phone’s network settings. Also check whether the problem continues with other Bluetooth headphones.

It usually happens at home or at the gym, and I do use Spotify. The older pair did it more often, while the newer pair only disconnects every few days but stays unstable for longer.

I’ve had similar dropouts recently, especially while using beta software. My AirPods seemed to switch back and forth between my phone, tablet, computer, and watch. Turning off automatic switching and updating—or leaving beta software—made the problem less frequent.

That sounds possible because the issue seems less frequent now, but when it starts, the repeated reconnecting can continue for quite a while.

I experienced the same thing across two different pairs of AirPods Pro. Sometimes removing one earbud and putting it back in temporarily restored the connection, but repeated failures across multiple pairs point more toward the phone, Bluetooth environment, or device-switching settings than a hardware defect in every pair.
