Apple ID password keeps failing across all my devices

For the past couple of weeks, our Apple ID has stopped working properly on two iPads and an iPhone that my husband and I share. It first asked me to sign in to use iMessage, but our longtime password was rejected. After too many attempts, the account was locked, so I changed the password and was able to sign in again. However, whenever we try to download an app, the password prompt simply clears and reappears after the password is entered. Neither the old nor the new password works, and we're worried about being locked out again. The only recent change was updating the password for our banking app, when all the devices offered to set up a passkey. Has anyone dealt with this or know what we should check before signing out?

What exact message appears when the app download fails? If the password field just shakes and clears, the credentials are being rejected even if there isn’t a clear error message. Avoid repeatedly guessing, since that can trigger another lockout. First confirm that the Apple ID email address is the correct one, then reset the password through Apple’s official account-recovery process and test the new password in a browser. If the new password works there but not on the devices, restart them and check for a pending Apple ID sign-in or verification request before trying the App Store again.

There isn’t a written error; the password field just shakes, empties, and asks again. I’m going to stop trying for now so I don’t lock it again and verify the account details first.
