I'm new to PC building and recently put together a system with a Ryzen 9 9900X and a GTX 5070. The CPU idles around 40–50°C, but its temperature rises significantly during gaming. While playing Oblivion Remastered at 1440p on ultra settings with DLSS, it briefly reaches about 91°C during loading screens at roughly 35–40% CPU usage. During normal gameplay, it stays around 73–80°C. The room is fairly warm, and the PC sits on a small table with plenty of space around it. Are these temperatures expected for this processor, or should I check my cooler and case airflow?

Those temperatures sound normal overall. Ryzen processors can briefly spike toward their thermal limit when boosting, especially during sudden bursts of work like loading screens. Sustained gaming temperatures around 73–80°C are generally fine. The exact result also depends on your CPU cooler, case, fan layout, and room temperature.
A brief jump to around 90°C is expected, but if the CPU remains in the 90s during ordinary gameplay, it would be worth checking that the cooler is mounted correctly, the thermal paste is applied properly, and the case has adequate intake and exhaust airflow.
The Ryzen 9 9900X is designed to boost up to roughly 95°C, so a short spike near 90–91°C is not automatically a problem. What matters more is whether it stays there continuously, begins throttling, crashes, or shows other signs of cooling trouble.
