Are thin clients still practical for modern VDI and Citrix deployments?

I haven't worked with thin clients in more than a decade. The few recent examples I've seen were in a small medical clinic, and my older experiences were mostly frustrating: connectivity problems, frozen sessions, unreliable peripherals, confused users, and plenty of support headaches. The environments I worked in eventually moved back to regular PCs.

Are thin clients still widely used, and has the experience improved with modern VDI, Citrix, AVD, or similar platforms? My organization is considering moving production systems to thin clients with Citrix, and I'm concerned about administration, troubleshooting, WAN dependency, hardware accessories, and the possibility of creating a large single point of failure.

Modern thin-client deployments can be much better than the old ones, but the backend has to be engineered properly. If the Citrix or VDI environment, storage, authentication, networking, and failover are healthy, the endpoints are usually easy to manage and hard for users to break. Your network connection becomes the critical dependency, though, especially if sessions cross a WAN or tunnel.

That WAN dependency would be one of my biggest concerns too. I’d want redundant links, tested failover, monitoring, and a clear plan for what users can do during an outage before committing to the design.

They aren’t automatically the right answer anymore. Dedicated clients still need firmware and OS updates, endpoint security, peripheral support, and eventual replacement. Once you add VDI licensing, server capacity, storage, networking, and specialized support, the total cost can exceed that of managed laptops or mini PCs. Video conferencing, webcams, printers, scanners, graphics applications, and other peripherals are where many deployments become painful. I’d run a pilot with representative users and hardware, measure the failure modes, and confirm the infrastructure has real redundancy before rolling it out broadly.

They remain a good fit for manufacturing floors, control systems, warehouses, and other dusty or specialized environments. A ruggedized endpoint is easier to replace than a full workstation, and keeping the applications centralized reduces data exposure and maintenance at the work area. They’re also common for operator terminals and HMI displays.

They’re still very common in hospitals, clinics, call centers, manufacturing, military, finance, universities, and other controlled environments. They’re useful when users need a standardized desktop, roaming access, strong lockdown, or quick hardware replacement. Hospitals especially benefit from centralized management and workflows where staff can move between terminals without carrying a laptop.

They’re also popular because a failed endpoint can often be swapped quickly without rebuilding a whole workstation. The tradeoff is that licensing and the centralized infrastructure can cost more than expected.

A lot of organizations use locked-down small PCs or standard mini desktops instead of dedicated thin-client hardware. They can be cheaper and faster, while still booting directly into Citrix, AVD, or another remote desktop service. Dedicated devices such as IGEL-based systems are still useful when centralized endpoint control and a very restricted operating environment matter.

In some cases, inexpensive business mini PCs are better value than purpose-built thin clients. The important distinction is where the desktop and data live, not necessarily what label is on the box.
