Can a Flexible Transparent Display Be Attached to a Window?

I'm looking for a display that could be attached directly to a window, show a computer image while powered on, and become mostly transparent or translucent when switched off. Ideally, it would be flexible and suitable for a business installation. Do displays like this exist commercially, or is there a practical alternative?

A projector aimed at frosted glass or a removable projection film is probably the most practical solution. It can display an image when needed and leave the window relatively unobstructed when it’s off. The tradeoff is that ambient light can reduce contrast.

Rear projection onto a translucent panel can create a similar effect, such as projecting onto frosted glass from the opposite side. It may look clean when installed properly, although it won’t be as transparent or sharp as a conventional monitor.

Another option is a transparent or semi-transparent heads-up display, but those are usually designed for limited information rather than a full high-resolution computer desktop. Some businesses instead use motorized screens that lower or fold away when they’re not needed.

Transparent OLED displays do exist, but they’re still expensive and fairly specialized. Flexible OLED technology is also available, though mostly in small devices such as foldable phones. A large, flexible, transparent monitor that becomes clear when turned off isn’t really a common commercial product yet.

The main issue is that a normal LCD can block or reduce light, but it can’t create brightness on its own. That’s why LCD panels need a backlight. Transparent displays solve some of this with transparent OLED technology, but they’re not yet practical or widely available for a typical window installation.
