I was using my personal laptop and home Wi‑Fi while signed in to my work email and Google Drive. After switching to Google Search, it looked like I had been signed out, and trying to sign back in to the work account just refreshed the page. I then searched for adult content while apparently logged out, but SafeSearch blocked the results. I use Safari. Why might this have happened? Was I really signed out of the work account, and could my employer see the search even though I was on my own device and home network? I'm mostly worried about an embarrassing misunderstanding rather than disciplinary action.

For ordinary personal browsing, your employer usually can’t see the details of traffic simply because you were signed in to work email or Drive. On a personal home connection, your home network and internet provider are separate from the company network. However, if the laptop is enrolled in company device management, has a work security agent installed, or routes traffic through an always-on company VPN or proxy, the organization may have more visibility. Check whether the device has management profiles or VPNs installed.
Safari may have separate Google sessions or a browser profile managed by your organization. Being signed out of Google Search doesn’t necessarily mean every Google service session, cookie, or device-management connection was removed. SafeSearch can also be enabled by browser settings, an account policy, DNS filtering, or device management, so it isn’t proof that your employer saw the specific search.
The safest setup is to keep work and personal activity separate: use a different browser or browser profile for work, sign out of work accounts when finished, and avoid installing company management software on a personal computer unless you understand what it controls. A one-off blocked search is unlikely to trigger attention, but company administrators could investigate activity if their security tools are configured to log it.
