Can Both RAM Sticks Fail at the Same Time?

My computer has been crashing while gaming, and the error logs point toward memory problems. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic and found that one RAM stick fails almost immediately, while the other starts showing errors around 20–30% into the test. The errors appeared when testing in slots two and four. Both sticks are G.Skill TridentZ modules paired with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D. XMP had been enabled and worked normally for about two years, but I also tested with XMP disabled and still saw failures. The system has decent airflow, sits off the floor, and is connected through a surge protector. There was also a brief power outage during a lightning storm some time ago. Is it realistic for both RAM modules to fail together, or should I be more concerned about the motherboard, CPU memory controller, or RAM slots? I'm testing another RAM kit to compare the results.

A brief outage or lightning-related surge could potentially damage memory, even when the failure doesn’t happen immediately. Since the system already has reasonable airflow and isn’t sitting on a carpeted floor, overheating or static buildup seems less likely. Let the replacement kit run through several complete memory tests, and test the suspect modules separately rather than relying only on one quick Windows Memory Diagnostic run.

Test each module by itself, then test the suspected modules in another known-working computer if possible. If both sticks fail independently while an older kit passes in the same system, the G.Skill kit is the most likely problem. It is unusual for both modules to fail at once, but a power event or another electrical issue could have damaged them together.

That comparison is useful because the older kit passing in the same slots makes the motherboard and CPU memory controller much less suspicious. It doesn’t absolutely prove they’re perfect, but it strongly points toward the newer RAM kit.

Make sure XMP is disabled while troubleshooting. XMP, DOCP, and EXPO are memory overclocking profiles, so instability with them enabled does not automatically mean the RAM is physically defective. However, if the modules still produce errors at their default settings and fail individually, they should be treated as defective. A faulty CPU memory controller or motherboard slot can cause similar symptoms, which is why testing another kit in the same slots is important.

The kit worked with XMP for roughly two years, and the errors continued with XMP turned off. If another kit passes extended testing in the same slots, that makes an intermittent XMP issue or CPU controller problem much less likely.
