Can I add a second DDR5 RAM stick without matching the brand?

My oldest has a gaming PC with 16GB of DDR5 memory installed as a single stick. I'd like to surprise him with an upgrade, but I'm unsure whether RAM is brand-specific. Can I buy another 16GB stick from any manufacturer, or should I match the existing stick's brand and specifications? I want to avoid compatibility problems or making the upgrade frustrating.

The brand itself usually isn’t important, but the specifications are. Try to match the capacity, speed, timings, and voltage of the existing module. A program such as CPU-Z can show those details, or you can carefully photograph the label on the stick when the computer is powered off. Buying the exact same model is generally the safest option.

Different brands can use different memory chips, such as Samsung, SK hynix, or Micron. That doesn’t automatically make one brand incompatible, but mixing modules with different chips or settings can sometimes require lowering the memory speed or manually adjusting settings. Matching the original stick is the least risky approach.

When checking the label or removing the memory, shut the PC down completely, switch off or unplug the power supply, and handle the module by its edges. Never remove RAM while the computer is running.

If possible, get the same model or buy a matched two-stick kit. DDR5 systems can be more sensitive to mixed memory, and identical modules are more likely to run reliably at their advertised settings. The motherboard and processor also need to support the desired memory speed.

Even when mixed modules work, a matched kit is preferable because it avoids potential stability issues and will look consistent inside the case.
