Can I add another DDR5 RAM stick, or does it need to match exactly?

My oldest has a gaming PC with 16GB of DDR5 memory installed as a single stick. I'd like to surprise him with an upgrade, but I'm not sure whether RAM is brand-specific. Can I buy any additional 16GB DDR5 stick, or should I match the existing module's brand and specifications? I'd really like to avoid compatibility problems or having to troubleshoot an unhappy teenager.

The memory chips inside the modules can vary between manufacturers, and different DDR5 kits may use different timings or profiles. This usually matters more for tuning and stability than the brand printed on the heat spreader, but matching the existing kit is still the least frustrating option. Also check that the motherboard supports the total amount of RAM you plan to install.

If possible, buy the exact same memory module that’s already installed. Two matching sticks are generally more consistent than mixing different kits, and the pair can run in dual-channel mode. Take a photo of the label inside the case while the PC is powered off, then search for that exact model number.

The brand doesn’t have to be identical, but matching the important specifications is best: capacity, speed or MT/s, timings, and voltage. A matching stick is usually the safest choice. You can use a utility such as CPU-Z to read the details from the installed module, but be careful not to remove RAM while the computer is running.
