Can I build a gaming PC for $800 that reaches 120 FPS?

I'm looking to buy a gaming PC in Wisconsin with a budget of about $800. I'd like to play demanding games such as Garry's Mod with heavy addons, GTA V, Sonic Frontiers, Marvel's Spider-Man, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, and Cyberpunk 2077. Ideally, I want high settings and at least 120 FPS, though I'm open to 60–90 FPS if 120 isn't realistic. I'm flexible about the case and would consider either building or buying a used system.

For $800, a used gaming PC is probably your best option. A new build can handle these games at 1080p, but Cyberpunk at 120 FPS on high settings is not realistic without finding an unusually good local deal. You’ll likely need to use medium settings, upscaling, or a lower frame-rate target.

I’ve reconsidered and would be happy with around 60–90 FPS if that makes the budget more realistic.

Cyberpunk at 120 FPS with high settings is beyond what most $800 systems can provide, especially if you’re buying new. Look through local listings for complete desktops with a modern six-core CPU and a graphics card around the RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4060, RX 6700 XT, or better. Make sure the seller provides the exact parts and lets you test the system.

If the price is too limiting, I may stick with my PS5 for now and wait for a better deal.

At this budget, focus on 1080p rather than 1440p. Check used listings and local computer shops, since an older but well-balanced desktop can offer much better value than a brand-new prebuilt. Waiting for a major sale could also help, but don’t assume a sale will make 120 FPS in every demanding game possible.

Would it make sense to keep using a console for now and wait for a major sale before buying the PC?
