Can I use a school-managed Chromebook with another operating system?

I bought a cheap Chromebook online, but during setup I discovered that it's still managed by a school or other organization. If I erase ChromeOS, could I install Windows or Linux and use it normally? If that isn't possible, could I use the Chromebook as a second monitor for my main PC?

Most Chromebooks don’t have strong Windows support, and Linux compatibility can vary by model. More importantly, management restrictions may prevent enabling developer mode or changing the firmware, so installing another operating system probably won’t be practical.

The best option is to request a refund. The organization’s administrator needs to remove the Chromebook from its management system using the device’s serial number. You generally can’t bypass that management yourself, and a managed device being sold this way may indicate it was improperly acquired.

A Chromebook usually can’t work as a monitor because it has no video input. Some models might support software-based screen sharing, but that requires the Chromebook to boot normally and would have noticeable limitations. I’d focus on getting your money back or asking the managing organization to deprovision it.
