I'm building a PC for the first time in several years. My Ryzen 7 5800X3D came with a carbon thermal pad, so I decided to use it. However, the cooler also had thermal paste already applied, and I installed it without thinking about the two materials being used together. Could having both the pad and paste installed hurt cooling performance, or am I worrying unnecessarily?

I’d remove both and apply a fresh, good-quality layer of thermal paste. The 5800X3D can run hot and may reach its thermal limit under heavy loads, though it’s designed to protect itself and reduce boost safely when needed.
The pad and thermal paste serve the same purpose, so you should use one or the other rather than stacking them. Remove the cooler, clean off the pre-applied paste with isopropyl alcohol, and remount it directly on the pad—or remove the pad and keep the paste. Using both probably won’t damage anything, but the extra layer can make heat transfer slightly worse.
Don’t panic—this won’t have instantly harmed the processor. Still, it’s best to avoid combining the pad with the cooler’s pre-applied paste. Pick whichever option you prefer, clean the surfaces carefully, and monitor temperatures afterward.

That’s what I was worried about. I’ll remove the pad, clean everything, and apply fresh paste instead.
