Can I Use AppleCare+ to Repair an iPhone That Was Already Cracked?

I bought an iPhone 17 Pro about a year ago and didn't add AppleCare+ because I've generally been careful with my phones. About three months ago, I dropped it and cracked the entire front glass, although the display and touch function still work. Repair shops quoted me around $400, which is too expensive for me as a college student. I recently checked my settings and, surprisingly, was offered the option to add AppleCare+. I paid the $15 charge, and the device was marked eligible without asking me to complete a diagnostic inspection. I'm thinking about taking it in for repair next month, but I'm worried the damage may be denied because it happened before I purchased the coverage. Will the repair center be able to tell when the crack occurred, and is the repair likely to be covered?

AppleCare+ is meant to cover accidental damage, but damage that existed before the plan started can be excluded. Since the phone was apparently allowed to enroll without a diagnostic check, the safest move is to have Apple inspect it as soon as possible and ask exactly what repair fee applies. Waiting a month could make the situation harder to explain, so keep your enrollment confirmation and coverage details.

This is a good reminder that protection plans are usually cheapest and simplest to add when buying the device. Being careful helps, but accidents still happen. For now, check the plan’s start date and terms, then book an official inspection instead of waiting until next month.

If AppleCare+ was successfully added and the coverage is active, you should contact Apple and arrange an inspection or repair rather than relying on the earlier third-party quotes. A previous estimate from an independent repair shop generally isn’t the same as Apple documenting the damage, but the technician will still inspect the phone and make the final decision. Don’t assume coverage automatically overrides pre-existing damage.

The fact that Settings let you purchase the plan doesn’t guarantee that an already-cracked screen will be covered. Apple may inspect the device and reject a claim if they determine the damage predates the plan. Independent repair shops also set their own prices, so you should compare that quote with Apple’s AppleCare+ accidental-damage fee, but be prepared for the existing crack not to qualify.
