I need to take an exam that requires Safe Exam Browser, but the software does not officially support Linux. A Windows virtual machine is not suitable because SEB may need access to the host system and hardware. Is there any reliable way to run it natively on Linux or through Wine or another compatibility layer? If someone has successfully used it, which distribution and version worked, and were there any limitations?

Ask whether the school or exam provider can supply a loaner laptop, a testing-center computer, or another approved arrangement. Installing invasive lockdown software on your personal Linux machine may be undesirable, and unofficial workarounds could leave you unable to start the exam.
If SEB needs direct hardware or system-level access, Wine won't reproduce that reliably. Even if the application opens, it could fail its checks or reject the machine when the exam starts. I wouldn't count on a compatibility-layer workaround for something this strict.
Changing a browser's user agent to imitate SEB isn't a dependable solution. The exam system may check much more than the browser identification string, and pretending to be SEB could violate the exam provider's rules. Only use an officially supported setup or get confirmation from the exam administrator.
You should probably plan on using Windows directly. SEB performs system and environment checks that are unlikely to work correctly through Wine, and a virtual machine may be detected or unable to provide the access it expects. Dual-booting Windows or using a separate, inexpensive computer is the most realistic option.
