Cat Triggered Strange Keyboard Inputs and Backlight Problems—How Can I Fix It?

I've used a Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition for about four years without any problems. Last night my cat lay across several keys, including Space, Alt, Fn, the key beside Fn, and Ctrl. The backlight stopped working, and afterward the keyboard began producing delayed or completely incorrect inputs. For example, Backspace acted like the Windows key, Space produced symbols, and ordinary letters sometimes registered as nothing. The issue appears random and temporarily disappeared after I repeatedly pressed and mashed the keys, but I'd like a reliable fix if it happens again. What should I check?

That combination of Fn, Alt, Ctrl, and the nearby keys may have activated Razer’s on-the-fly macro recording or changed the onboard profile. A recorded macro could make a key output random-looking text, especially if it captured the earlier key mashing. Open Synapse, inspect the keyboard’s profiles and macros, remove anything unexpected, or reset the onboard profile to its default settings. This is worth checking before assuming the hardware has failed.

I hadn’t considered that it might have recorded a macro. I’ll check Synapse and the onboard profile first—thank you!

The fact that pressing the keys repeatedly temporarily fixes it suggests a stuck modifier or activated function layer. Try the keyboard’s factory-reset procedure; on many Razer models, that involves holding Fn and Escape for a few seconds while reconnecting the keyboard. This should clear an accidentally activated layer or profile, though you may need to confirm the exact reset steps for your model.

That would explain why it suddenly started working again. I’ll try the reset combination if the problem returns.

I’d start by opening the keyboard carefully and cleaning around the affected keys. Dust, debris, or a key that isn’t fully releasing could cause strange input behavior. Check for anything lodged under the keycaps and see whether the switches move normally.

That makes sense. I can open it up and clean around those keys—thanks!
