I installed a new 2×8 GB DDR4 RAM kit in my Dell Inspiron 16 5625 after selling the original 8 GB module. Since then, the laptop sometimes shuts down during large driver or BIOS updates and may refuse to start until I disconnect the battery and drain the remaining power. I was told by school technicians that the memory may have timing issues, although their memory tests and stress tests did not report an obvious failure. Windows 11 is also damaged after some experimental debloating, so I need to reinstall it, but I'm worried the system will fail during installation. The laptop has also occasionally shown a few blinking white pixels near the top of the screen and sometimes fails to wake the display after sleep. What should I check, and is replacing the RAM with a matched kit the best next step?

The shutdowns, blinking charging light, display wake problems, and BIOS-update failures may not all be caused by RAM. They could also indicate firmware, motherboard, battery, power-management, or display hardware trouble. Back up important files, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and run Dell’s pre-boot diagnostics. A BIOS update should only be attempted with stable AC power and a charged battery; if the machine repeatedly powers off during it, have Dell or a qualified repair technician inspect it rather than repeatedly forcing updates.
If the new RAM is mixed, unusually high-speed, or has incompatible SPD/XMP timing information, replace it with a known-compatible matched 2×8 GB DDR4 kit intended for laptops. Before doing that, load BIOS defaults, reseat both modules, and check whether the BIOS reports the expected capacity and speed. Laptop memory normally uses standard JEDEC settings rather than desktop-style XMP profiles.
For Windows, create a bootable installation USB from another computer and perform a clean reinstall after backing up your files. If the laptop remains unstable even when booted from the installer or a Linux live USB, Windows is probably not the main problem. If it works normally outside the installed system, reinstalling Windows and the Dell chipset and power-management drivers may resolve the software damage.
Start by confirming the exact specifications of both memory modules, including speed, timings, voltage, rank, and whether they are actually a matched kit. Two modules can both pass basic tests but still be a poor combination for a laptop’s memory controller. Run the built-in Dell memory diagnostics, then use MemTest86 or MemTest86+ for several passes—ideally overnight. If errors appear, test each stick separately and in each slot.
