Dell Laptop Won’t Power On After Being Hit—No Charging Light

I was lightly hit by a car while walking, and my Dell laptop was inside a tote bag when I fell. The laptop doesn't have any visible cracks, but it now shows no signs of life: no fans, no power, and no charging indicator when I plug it in. I'm okay aside from some bruising, but I can't afford to replace the laptop and it's too old to be under warranty. Is there anything I can safely check before taking it to a repair shop?

Start with the simple possibilities: try a different outlet if you can, inspect the charger cable and connector for bends or damage, and check whether the plug fits securely in the laptop. If the charger has an indicator light, see whether it turns on. Avoid forcing a damaged connector into the port.

Because the laptop took an impact and now has no charging light at all, the damage may be internal. The charging port, its cable, the battery connection, or the motherboard could have been affected. A loose charging-port connection might be a relatively inexpensive repair, but motherboard damage can cost much more. If you’re comfortable doing so, disconnecting the battery and checking internal connections may help, but otherwise a repair shop should diagnose it before you spend money on parts.

Since the laptop was damaged in an accident, document the damage and keep any repair estimate. If another driver was responsible, their insurance may potentially cover property damage and related injuries. Make sure you have the accident details and any official report before filing a claim.
