I'm building a new PC and upgrading from a GTX 1080. I've recently moved from a 1080p VA monitor to a 1440p IPS display, so I'm looking at graphics cards with around 16GB of VRAM. I'm deciding between an Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, averaging about $1,100, and an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, averaging around $750. I haven't used modern features such as DLSS, FSR, ray tracing, path tracing, or frame generation before. Are these features important for competitive games or indie titles, and would Nvidia's software advantages justify the large price difference?

Indie games are usually light enough that you won’t need DLSS or FSR, although poorly optimized titles can benefit from them. Competitive games typically prioritize high native frame rates and low latency, so rasterized performance matters more than ray tracing or frame generation. Unless you specifically need a particular Nvidia-only feature, the RX 9070 XT looks like the stronger gaming value at those prices. It also offers plenty of VRAM for 1440p.
For competitive games, upscaling can be useful if you need extra frames, but ray tracing and path tracing usually aren’t worth enabling because they reduce performance. Frame generation is also a poor fit for competitive games since it can add latency, even though the frame rate number increases. It makes more sense in slower single-player games.
You don’t need these features, but they can improve performance. AMD cards generally offer stronger raw performance and more VRAM for the money, while Nvidia usually has the edge in upscaling quality, frame generation, and ray tracing. For ordinary rasterized gaming, AMD is often the better value.
DLSS and FSR render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct the image at a higher one, giving you more FPS with some loss of clarity depending on the quality setting. Ray tracing and path tracing improve lighting accuracy but can be extremely demanding. You generally aren’t required to use any of these features, although some newer games are designed with upscaling in mind. Nvidia is still slightly better in these areas, but recent AMD cards have narrowed the gap substantially.

Thanks for the explanation. With the 9070 XT around $750 and the 5070 Ti closer to $1,100, it sounds like Nvidia’s feature advantage probably isn’t enough to justify the extra cost for my use case.
